Teen Wall ClimbingLearning Independence From Experience for youth aged 14 through 21

The TeenLIFE program meets year-round on weekends and school holidays as well as summer camp.  Focus on independence and life-planning after high school including activities that promote job and college preparation, indoor/outdoor mobility, technology skills, and much more!

Year-Round Program

Throughout the school year, students meet on various weekends and days off of school to work on the skills needed to be independent adults. Activities include:

  • Safe outdoor travel skills
  • Cooking and self-care techniques
  • Braille or use of magnifiers and other low-vision devices to assist in reading and writing efficiently
  • Use of computers and other high-tech assistive devices
  • Polite social interaction and self-advocacy
  • Resume-writing
  • Teen SkillsNetworking and interviewing
  • Guidance in understanding vocational interests and values
  • Volunteer work experiences
  • Staff who are blind or visually impaired act as role models. 

While the main focus of the program is to prepare students for life after high school, fun recreational activities are also included.

Family Support Group

All students in The TeenLife Program and their families are invited to participate in Family Activities throughout the year. The purpose of these events is to allow families to connect with each other, learn more about advocating for their child, and for the whole family to develop techniques to cope with having a child with a visual impairment. Some of the events include:

  • Back to School Bash
  • National Blind Sports Day
  • White Cane Day
  • Fall Festival
  • Holiday Party

Teen Family SportsSummer Camp

During the summer, a six-week day camp is offered at the Lighthouse of Broward. Students work on gaining skills through daily lessons, meaningful trips into the community, and work experiences. Skills addressed include: 

  • Safe outdoor travel skills
  • Cooking and self-care techniques

  • Use of computers and other high-tech assistive devices
  • Polite social interaction and self-advocacy
  • Resume-writing
  • Networking and interviewing
  • Guidance in understanding vocational interests and values, and maintain employment.

While the main focus of the program is to prepare students for life after high school, fun recreational activities are also included.

College Prep Camp

Students stay on campus at Florida Atlantic University where they learn critical skills needed for post-high school. Students in this program are college-bound and will attend mock classes. Each student is assigned a job and completes a work experience. In the evenings, students participate in age-appropriate activities offered in the area.
