A Message from the President and CEO

Dear Lighthouse of Broward Family and Friends,

As we move into the summer season, I am excited to share some of the wonderful progress, accomplishments, and moments of celebration taking place throughout our organization.

Construction Update

Our renovation project continues to move forward with significant progress. Bathroom tiling has been completed, and the first-floor walls have been freshly painted, giving the space a bright, refreshed look. Installation of the new ceiling tiles is currently underway, and motion-detecting lights have now been installed throughout the building, improving both convenience and energy efficiency. Work on our new training kitchen is also progressing beautifully. We cannot wait to welcome you back into a renewed and reimagined Lighthouse.

Global and Lighthouse Accessibility Awareness Day

On May 21, we proudly hosted our inaugural Global and Lighthouse Accessibility Awareness Day celebration. More than 100 clients, community partners, vendors, staff members, and board members joined us for this special event focused on accessibility, inclusion, and advocacy. Following lunch, a panel of seven accessibility professionals from across our community engaged attendees in a meaningful discussion about accessibility, advocacy, and the work that still lies ahead as we continue building a more inclusive world.

I would also like to recognize our own Eric Barrette, whose vision, planning, and leadership made this event such a success. Eric not only organized and executed a wonderful program, but also proudly represented Lighthouse during a live appearance on NBC6.

Heroes Celebration

Our 6th Annual Heroes Celebration, presented in partnership with American Heritage Schools, was an incredible success, raising more than $68,000 to support Lighthouse programs and services. Beyond the fundraising, the evening provided a beautiful opportunity to showcase the life-changing impact of our mission. This year, we were honored to recognize two extraordinary individuals.

Ohani Henriquez has been part of the Lighthouse family since childhood and continues to inspire us with his journey, perseverance, and accomplishments. We were also proud to recognize Mike Ader, who enjoyed a distinguished career of more than 30 years in law enforcement before losing his vision. After completing his rehabilitation services at Lighthouse, Mike was so grateful for the support he received that he created a guitar program for individuals who are blind or visually impaired. Today, he continues to share his passion by teaching guitar classes as a volunteer. Both Ohani and Mike remind us what is possible when people receive the support, encouragement, and tools they need to thrive.

Looking Ahead

As summer begins, I hope you and your families enjoy a safe and joyful season. Please remember to stay cool, stay hydrated, and continue following Lighthouse on our social media platforms so you do not miss important updates, upcoming events, and inspiring stories from our community.

As we enter hurricane season, I also encourage everyone to take time now to prepare. Please review your family’s emergency plan, replenish supplies, check medications and important documents, and make sure you have what you need to stay safe and informed. For individuals who are blind or visually impaired, planning ahead is especially important, including labeling emergency supplies, keeping assistive technology charged, and identifying trusted supports before a storm is approaching.

If you or someone you love may need additional assistance during an emergency, please consider registering for Broward County’s Vulnerable Population Registry. This registry helps ensure that individuals who may need sheltering or evacuation assistance are connected to appropriate resources before a storm or emergency occurs. You may register by calling 311 or by completing the online form at: https://webapps2.broward.org/VulnerableRegistry/Welcome.aspx.

Thank you for being such an important part of the Lighthouse family. Together, we continue to make a meaningful difference in the lives of people who are blind or visually impaired.

Wishing you a wonderful summer,

Ellyn Drotzer, MSW, LCSW
President and CEO
